On October 5, 1938, after suffering from tuberculosis, Faustina was called to the Father’s House. In 2000 she was canonized by Saint John Paul II, who established the second Sunday of Easter as “Divine Mercy Sunday” and the day of her death as her Feast.
5. Saint Gerard Majella
Gerardo lost his father when he was 12 years old, which led his family to poverty and abandonment. He worked as a tailor to support his household, although he soon decided that his vocation was the consecrated life.
He tried to join the Capuchin order, but was rejected due to his health. Eventually, he was accepted as a lay brother into the Redemptorists, where he served as sexton, gardener, porter and tailor, the trade of his father.
