This January 6, Bishop José Antonio Eguren, Metropolitan Archbishop of Piura, in northern Peru, was pronounced about the case, warning that the publication has caused “deep indignation and rejection among Catholics.”
“Stealing the sacrosanct Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, really present in the consecrated host, to use it in witchcraft rites, is a sacrilege and a demonic act,” said the Peruvian prelate.
Bishop Eguren recalled that the sacrilegious use of the Eucharist entails automatic excommunication, and encouraged the priests of his archdiocese “to take the utmost care” when distributing the consecrated hosts.
Furthermore, the Peruvian prelate demanded that the hosts of the video podcast “publicly apologize, since what was disclosed in their program has deeply hurt the Eucharistic faith of millions of Peruvians who believe in the real presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.”
