Likewise, a nun who works in Haiti—whose name she did not want to reveal for security reasons—told ACI Prensa that “the panorama is bleak” and that the majority of Haitians “are like kidnapped in their homes.”
“The Haitian has an incredible capacity for suffering and a unique capacity for resistance,” he said.
The nun indicated that “people are afraid to go out,” because in each neighborhood “there is an armed group.” However, she stated that for her “it is very edifying” to be able to witness how Haitians guard and maintain their faith, putting all their trust in God.
“In the midst of difficulties they invoke God. They have a great capacity to face the adversity of life and transform their pain into a driving force to overcome themselves and emerge stronger. “They live in joy and are the promoters—sometimes unintentionally—of their own destiny,” remarked the Spanish nun.
For her, this is a transformative experience that strengthens her faith and her state of life as a consecrated woman. “In order to reach the light you have to go through the cross,” she indicated. Furthermore, she considers admirable the tenacity of the Catholics who, despite everything, have wanted to attend her parishes for religious services.
Lozano, for his part, commented that one of ACN’s priorities is to do everything possible “so that Christians do not feel alone.” For this reason, they organize various support projects such as retreats and training courses, especially for young people.
The pontifical foundation has also supported the different diocesan radio stations in Haiti, “so that they are the voice of the Church in the most distant places.” In electrical matters, ACN has provided solar panels to different locations, to help alleviate the great lack of public services.
The foundation is also dedicated to supporting the Haitian clergy, so that they can have a break and it is somewhat easier to continue being a support for the population in the face of so much suffering.
Lozano considers the role of the country’s bishops to be of great relevance, who have constantly called for understanding. In that sense, he stated that ACN joined the call of the prelates of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM), for this March 22, in a Continental Day of Prayerto ask God for peace in the Caribbean nation.
Finally, the nun in Haiti also highlighted the efforts of the local Church. “We feel on behalf of the Archbishop, and all the bishops, statements that seek to maintain hope in the midst of pain,” she stated.
“Prayer moves hearts and I thank you, on behalf of all the religious and all the people who are here, for a very special prayer for Haiti,” he concluded.
