Due to price, agility in urban traffic and low maintenance costs, more and more people choose motorcycles as a means of daily transportation. And even more so with the increases that public transportation, cars and fuel have received.
Logically, the motorcycle does not offer the level of safety, comfort and technology of a car, although in price (beyond the fact that there are high-end models that cost the same as a car) there is no point of comparison either.
The offer of the cheapest motorcycles on the market starts, on average, from million pesos, although you can get some models below that figure.
These are low displacement models, generally 110 cubic centimeters (cc.), manufactured in the country and belonging to the segment CUBan acronym that in English means “cheap urban bike.”
The marked increase in motorcycle sales began a few years ago when the government encouraged local production from IKD assembly “Incompletely Knocked Down”, a format that allows the motorcycle to be assembled with imported parts, complementing them with national parts.
The benefit is that the greater the number of national components that the motorcycle has, the lower the customs tax that manufacturers will pay to import the rest of the parts.
This impulse allowed the establishment of national capital groups such as Iraola (currently Corven), La Emilia and Simpa, to name a few, which assemble various brands and models.
The motorcycle boom
The rise of the motorcycle, like the bicycle, began to become visible in times of pandemic, when many people began to choose it due to the need to use alternative means to public transportation. Prices within reach and payment facilities were the key.
This whole panorama had the first great impact in 2021, the year in which for the first time in history They patented more motorcycles than cars. According to ACARA reports, in the country they sold 383.683 motorcycles against 381,777 cars.
This trend continued in the following years. In 2022, motorcycle patents amounted to 410.955 (against 407,532 cars), while in 2023 the market grew by 14.5%, reaching 470.691 units (the cars did not exceed the barrier of 450,000 sales).
Within this context, the best-selling model for years is the Honda Wave 110, which is not among the cheapest. The range offers two versions, with drum brakes ($1,683,400) and disc brakes ($2,016,800).
