There are still 1,800 political prisoners in Venezuela
“They have been released, we have verified more than 100 people in December, we hope that more will be released or verify more releases, but we continue to ask for the freedom of all political prisoners, who number more than 1,800 people,” he added.
Furthermore, he denounced that this has been “the Christmas in Venezuela with the largest number of political prisoners, at least in this century.”
Romero concluded by expressing his closeness to all the relatives of the political prisoners in Venezuela, and asked all citizens to “think, wish and pray that these people are released.”
The releases come after the Venezuelan bishops asked the Chavista regime to release the thousands of detainees for political reasons, in their Christmas message on November 29.
Then, the prelates denounced the irregular procedures of the State security forces, the detention of adolescents and the “dramatic social, economic and political realities” that the country is going through.
“May the weapons of violence, exclusion, violation of human rights, and poverty be transformed into instruments of happiness, progress, reconciliation, freedom and peace, and we may be more brothers,” the bishops wished.
