The Pope thanked his visit to the Vatican and Rome in the middle of the jubilee year and also within the framework of the sixteenth annual meeting of the organization, whose theme revolves around The new world order: policy of great powers, corporate domains and the future of human flowering.
The Holy Father said to perceive “both concern and longing” in this subject, because “we are all concerned with the direction of our world, and even so, we yearn for a real human flowering. We yearn for a world where each person can live in peace, freedom and fullness according to God’s plan.”
Saint Augustine and the values of the Kingdom of God
In that sense, he suggested to Catholic legislators to look at the past, specifically to the “imposing figure of St. Augustine of Hippo”, as an outstanding voice in the history of the Church. Saint Augustine, said Pope Augustine, “witnessed immense disorders and social disintegration” during the late Roman era, before what he replied writing The city of God“A work that offers a vision of hope, a vision of meaning that still affects us today.”
Explaining the work of St. Augustine, Pope León said that the heart of man and human civilization face two realities: pride and self -love, characterized by the search for power, prestige and pleasure; and on the other hand the love of God, characterized by justice, charity and humility.
“In these terms, Agustín encouraged Christians to instill in earthly society the values of the kingdom of God, thus guiding history towards its fullness in God, allowing at the same time the real human flowering in this life,” said the Pope.
“This theological vision can be anchored to current changing currents: the emergence of new centers of gravity, the alteration of old alliances and the unprecedented influence of global corporations and technologies, not to mention the numerous violent conflicts. The crucial question that we ask, therefore, to the believers is: how can we achieve this task?”
Human flowering
To answer this question, Pope León said that the meaning of human flowering must be “clarified,” because there is a confusion between a prosperous life and “a life of material wealth or a life of individual autonomy and pleasure without restrictions.” An “ideal future” of technological comforts and “consumer satisfaction.”
“However, we know that this is not enough. We see this in opulent societies, where many people fight against loneliness, despair and a sense of lack of meaning,” added the Pope.
On the contrary, he explained that the true human flowering “comes from what the Church calls integral human development” which is the development of the human being in all its dimensions. A global vision of man that originates in natural law and “the moral order that God has written in the human heart, whose deepest truths are illuminated by the Gospel of Christ.”
“The future of human development depends on amor around which we choose to organize our society: a selfish love, love of oneself or the love of God and neighbor. Of course, we already know the answer, ”he said.
“In their vocation as Catholic public legislators and servants, they are called to be bridge builders between the city of God and the city of man,” said Pope León.
Finally, he urged legislators to work for a world “where power is dominated by consciousness and law is at the service of human dignity,” also encouraged them to “reject the dangerous and counterproductive mentality that says that nothing will ever change.”
“I know that the challenges are immense, but the grace of God who works in human hearts is even more powerful,” concluded the Holy Father.
