Vatican: Pope Leo XIV proposes reconciliation in the face of the globalization of impotence

Pope Leo XIV proposes for today’s world the culture of reconciliation in the face of the “globalization of impotence”, the feeling that there is nothing to do before evil, injustice and pain.

“Just as Pope Francis opposed the globalization of indifference with the culture of the encounter, today I would like together we begin to oppose the globalization of impotence with a culture of reconciliation,” said Pope León in a video trough for the candidacy of the “welcome gestures” of Lampedusa, as a UNESCO Intangible Heritage.

“Reconciling is a particular way to meet. Today we must find ourselves healing our wounds, forgiving the evil we have done and also the one we have not done, but of which we suffer the consequences,” said Pope León.

Leo XIV recalled that the Italian island of Lampedusa, where many migrants arrive in the Mediterranean, has become a host place for thousands who have come forward, but that has also been the scene of the death of many, including mothers and children, who “cry out not only to heaven, but to our hearts. Many brothers and migrant sisters have been buried in Lampedusa and rest on the earth as a seed New World ”.

Pope Leo XIV said in his message that “the globalization of indifference, that Pope Francis denounced precisely from Lampedusa, seems to have transformed today into a globalization of impotence. Before injustice and innocent pain we are more aware, but we run the risk of being still, silent and sad, defeated by the feeling that there is nothing to do.”

“What can I do before such great evils? The globalization of impotence is the daughter of a lie: that the story has always been so, that the story is written by the victors. Then it seems that we cannot do anything. But it is not so: the story is devastated by the powerful, but is saved by the humble, the righteous, the martyrs, in which the good and the authentic humanity resume.

The Holy Father denounced that “there is a lot of fear, many prejudices, great walls, even invisible, among us and among our peoples, as a consequence of a injured story. The evil is transmitted from one generation to another, from one community to another. But also good is transmitted and knows how to be stronger. To practice it, to put it back into circulation, we must become experts into reconciliation.”
