Pope Francis raised his prayers for the two deceased and the dozens of injured and their families, after the roof of the Mariano de Nossa Senhora da Conceição sanctuary in Recife, Brazil, fell.
“I also pray for the victims of the accident at the Nossa Senhora da Conceição sanctuary, in the city of Recife, Brazil. May the Risen Lord console the wounded and their families,” said the Holy Father after praying the Angelus this Sunday in the Vatican.

After the accident, which occurred on August 30 while food was being distributed, the Archbishopric of Olinda and Recife published a note of regret in which Archbishop Paulo Jackson expressed his “deep sadness” for the tragic event in the so-called Morro da Conceição.
In his note, as he points out ACI Digital – EWTN Portuguese agency – the prelate extends his condolences and specifies that the archdiocese “offers all necessary help to the victims and their families, seeking to give them relief and hope in the midst of pain.”
“May Nossa Senhora da Conceição, our patron saint, intercede for all, granting comfort and strength in this moment of intense sadness,” the note concludes.

Suffrage mass for the deceased in the church in Recife
The Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife also reported that on Saturday, August 31, a large number of faithful participated in the suffrage Mass “for the souls of Antônio and Conceição, who died in the fall of the roof of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Conceição.”
“A provisional structure was placed in front of the sanctuary to host the Mass. “Archbishop Paulo Jackson presided over the Eucharist that was concelebrated by the rector of the sanctuary, Father Emerson Borges, and other priests of the Archdiocese,” the archbishopric reported.
At Mass “The governor (of the state) of Pernambuco and the prefect of Recife also participated,” with around more than 400 attendees in total.
