Pope Francis appointed Bishop Joel Portella Amado, until now Auxiliary Bishop of Rio de Janeiro, as the new Bishop of Petrópolis (Brazil), according to a statement from the Vatican Press Office.
The elected Bishop of Petrópolis succeeds Bishop Gregório Ben Lâmed Paixão, who was appointed Archbishop of Fortaleza in October 2023.
Bishop Joel Portella Amado was born on October 2, 1954 in Rio de Janeiro. He studied Philosophy at the Aloisiano Institute of the Society of Jesus and Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, obtaining a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in Pastoral Theology.
