Pope Francis appointed Bishop Murray Chatlain, until now Archbishop of Keewatin-Le Pas, as the new Archbishop of Winnipeg, in Canada.
Bishop Chatlain succeeds Bishop Richard J. Gagnon (76), whose resignation was accepted by the Holy Father after exceeding the retirement age of bishops of 75 years.

According to the Press Office of the VaticanBishop Murray Chatlain was born on January 19, 1963 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
He has a degree in Philosophy from the University of Saskatchewan and has a Master of divinity by Saint Peter’s Seminary in London (Ontario).
He was ordained a priest on May 15, 1987 for the Diocese of Saskatoon.
He has held, among others, the following positions: Pastoral ministry in several parishes in Saskatoon (1987-2000); Chaplain at City Hospital, Bishop James Mahoney and Holy Cross Institutes, and Guadalupe House (2000-2001); Pastoral ministry in the parishes of Kindersley, Marengo and Dodsland (2002-2005), and in the diocese of MacKenzie-Fort Smith in Black Lake and Fond-du-Lac; pastor at St. Patrick’s of Saskatoon (2005-2007).
He was named Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of MacKenzie-Fort Smith on June 23, 2007, received episcopal consecration on September 14 of the same year, and fully assumed the diocese on May 10, 2008.
He was appointed Archbishop of Keewatin-Le Pas on December 6, 2012.
He website of the Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le Pas notes that for six years, Bishop Chatlain has been a member of the Canadian Catholic Aboriginal Council of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB). He is president of the Bishops of Northern Canada.
His episcopal motto is The Lord has magnified to do with us (The Almighty has done great things for us), taken from Psalm 126 and related to Mary’s great prayer, the Magnificat.
