Bishop Ortega was born in Madrid (Spain) on November 14, 1962. He was ordained a priest on April 28, 1990, in the Archdiocese of Madrid. He is a Doctor in Canon Law and since 1993 he trained as a diplomat in Rome, at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.
He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on July 1, 1997. He was Apostolic Nuncio in Nicaragua (1997-1999), South Africa (1999-2002), Lebanon (2002-2004) and worked in the Section for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of State (2004-2015).
On August 1, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Jordan and Iraq and on October 10 of that year he was ordained bishop in St. Peter’s Basilica. On December 14, 2019, he arrived in Chile to carry out his diplomatic work.
