Vatican: Pope Francis appoints Croatian archbishop as new nuncio to Italy

Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Petar Rajič, new nuncio to Italy and the Republic of San Marino. Of Croatian origin, although born in Toronto (Canada) where his parents had emigrated, his last destination had been the Nunciature in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Ordained a priest in 1987, at the age of 28, he was soon sent to Rome to study, starting in 1991, at the Pontifical Lateran University and graduate from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.

Bishop Rajič, 65, has worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See since 1993, when he was sent to Iran and Latvia. He was later assigned to the General Affairs Section of the Secretary of State.
