Mons. Nann, also president of Cáritas del Perú for the period 2022 – 2025, is the second bishop in Peru to resign in 2024 before turning 75. In April, Bishop José Antonio Eguren, who until then was Archbishop of Piura and Tumbes, did the same.

The statement from Bishop Reinaldo Nann

The Prelature of Caravelí published this Monday a statement of Mons. Nann, who first indicated that, until his successor is elected, Mons. Ricardo Rodríguez, Auxiliary Bishop of Lima, has been appointed as Apostolic Administrator, who will appear in Caravelí on Sunday, July 21.

Mons. Nann recalled some of the work carried out in these years, such as having presided over Cáritas del Perú and “the gradual implementation of the pastoral renewal plan, the reimplementation of family catechesis, the creation of parish caritas, priestly solidarity, the creation of two listening centers, the implementation of prevention protocols in each parish, the ordination of three priests, the administrative restructuring of the ODEC and others.”

“Over time this activity and some disappointments caused me stress and high blood pressure. Since the time of Covid, my physical and mental health has been weakening and I feel that I no longer have the same strength as before,” explained the bishop.

“After some checks, the doctors suggested a time of rest and recovery. So I decided to resign from my position as bishop of Caravelí and ask for a sabbatical. I will do my treatments and recovery time in Germany with the emotional support of my Mother and my brothers,” he said.

Monsignor Reinaldo Nann thanked everyone and asked for forgiveness for his “impatience and other mistakes that I have made,” while encouraging them to welcome “with open arms and hearts the apostolic administrator Monsignor Ricardo Rodríguez.”

The now prelate emeritus will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving on July 14.

Who is Reinaldo Nann, prelate emeritus of Caravelí?

Bishop Reinaldo Nann was born in Freiburg (Germany), on August 25, 1960. He studied philosophy and theology at the Albert-Ludwig University.

He has held, among others, the following positions: parochial vicar of the churches of Freiburg, St. Anthony in Mannheim-Rheinau and St. Margarethen in Waldkirch; parish priest of San Conrado in los Olivos (Peru); director of the parish of San Jerónimo in the Archdiocese of Trujillo; Coordinator of the Schoenstatt Movement of the Archdiocese of Trujillo.

Until before being named bishop in 2017, he was parish priest of San Antonio de Padua in the Apostolic Vicariate of San José del Amazonas, in Peru.

Bishop Reinaldo Nann made news in March 2020 when he authorized confession by telephone, a decision he later had to reverse when the Vatican issued two provisions reminding that the sacraments must be administered in person.

Some time later, an investigation by ACI Prensa published in August of that same year revealed that the Prelature of Caravelí had accepted a priest investigated for sexual abuse in the Prelature of Huamachuco, despite the fact that Bishop Nann, as indicated in his statement, had He has also been “a member of the episcopal commission for the protection of minors.”
