The meeting with Mons. Sánchez Carrión, the first Ecuadorian who serves as Apostolic Nuncio, is given only one day after Pope Leo XIV appointed his first bishop in Honduras, Mons. Jenrry Johel Velásquez Hernández, 47, who was elected new bishop of the Diocese of the CEIBA.
As a nuncio or papal representative in Honduras, Mons. Sánchez Carrión has as one of its main tasks selections to priests who can be candidates to be bishops, such as the elected bishop of the CEIBA.
On Monday, June 10, Pope Leo XIV found a group of pontifical representatives who recalled that his work is “irreplaceable.”
“His role, his ministry is irreplaceable. So many things could not happen in the Church if it were not for the sacrifice, work and everything they do, so that such an important dimension of the great mission of the Church can move on, and precisely in that case I referred to, the selection of episcopate candidates. Thank you very much for what Pope León did before starting his speech.
Mons. Simón Bolívar Sánchez Carrión is 53 years old. He is a specialist in Canon Law and Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Honduras in October 2024. Archbishop was ordered on January 11, 2025 in Ecuador.
In May of this year he presented his credential letters before the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, in a meeting in which they dialogue on various issues of mutual collaboration, within the framework of relations with the Holy See, which has been maintained since 1861.
