With the story of the works that God has done for us, Holy Scripture unties the bonds of a paralyzed faith and makes us savor the Christian life again for what it truly is, a love story with the Lord.
The disciples, therefore, left; and then they continued—they left and continued—. Behind the Master they took steps forward. Indeed, his Word, while freeing us from the obstacles of the past and present, makes us mature in truth and charity, revives the heart, shakes it, purifies it from hypocrisy and fills it with hope.
The Bible itself attests that the Word is concrete and effective, it is “like rain and snow” for the terrain (cf. Is 55:10-11); “like fire”, “like a hammer that pulverizes the rock” (Jer 23:29); like a sharp sword that “discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb 4:12); like a “germ (…) incorruptible” (1 Pet, 1,23) that, although small and hidden, sprouts and produces fruit (cf. Mt 13). “The efficacy that lies in the word of God is so great that it is, in truth… food for the soul, a pure and perennial source of spiritual life” (II Vat. Ecum. Conc., Dogm. Const. Dei Verbum, twenty-one).
Brothers and sisters, the Sunday of the Word of God helps us return with joy to the sources of faith, which is born from listening to Jesus, the Word of the living God. As words are constantly said and read about the Church, may He help us rediscover the Word of life that resonates in the Church. Otherwise we will end up talking more about ourselves than about Him; and many times our thoughts and our problems will remain at the center, instead of Christ with his Word.
