“Be part of the steps of Leo XIV, make your donation to San Pedro’s obol.” With these words, the Vatican encourages Catholics to participate in the collection to support the Holy Father in his mission at the service of the Universal Church.
At the end of June, in most parishes the collection of the Obolo of San Pedro is made, an economic aid that the faithful offer to the Pontiff as an expression of support for the needs of the Catholic Church in the world and the charity works it performs.

Specifically, the collection is carried out in the solemnity of San Pedro and San Pablo, which is celebrated next Sunday, June 29.
As the Vatican said in a statement, the Obolo of St. Peter also represents a gesture “of communion and participation in the Pope’s mission to announce the Gospel, promote peace and spread Christian charity.”
In support of this initiative, the Secretariat for the Economy and the Dicastery for Communion have disseminated a video in which the “first steps” of Leo XIV are presented as Successor of San Pedro.
In the emotional and brief video, images of the beginning of the Pontificate of the Holy Father are projected with some of his most significant phrases, extracted in particular from his first greeting to the world from the balcony of the Basilica of San Pedro.
In 2023, the last year of which there are data, 48.4 million euros were raised compared to 43.5 of the previous year, according to the Secretariat for the Vatican economy.
These donations added 3.6 million assets income. However, its expenses were 109.4 million euros.
Due to this scenario, Pope Francis created on February 26 the Commission of Donations for Saint Sita (Commission of donations to the Holy See), a new organism to raise funds for “to the mission and for the charity of the Apostolic Headquarters”. The commission works to the experiment (Test) over the next three years, until 2028.
