US bishops: The application of the law alone is not a solution to migratory challenges

As the Trump administration intensifies the actions of application of immigration law throughout the United States, US bishops are raising the voice in solidarity with unauthorized immigrants who are being arrested “only by their immigration status” and sending the message that “the application of the law itself” cannot be the solution to address the migratory challenges of the nation.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow bishops, the president of the United States Catholic Bishop Conference (USCCB), Archbishop Timothy Broglio, said that “the actions of the forces of the order destined to preserve the order and guarantee the security of the community are necessary for the common good. However, the current efforts go far beyond those with a criminal record.”

“The arrest and mass expulsion of our neighbors, friends and family only for their immigration status, especially in arbitrary ways or without due process, represent a deep social crisis before which no person of good will can remain silent,” said Mons. Broglio.

“On behalf of my bishops, I want to assure all those affected by actions that tear the fabric of our communities the solidarity of their shepherds,” the prelate continued. “Have all of us’s commitment to be with you at this difficult time.”

At the same time, referring to protests against the application of the immigration law in several cities of the country, Mons. Broglio insisted that “although protest and dissent can be a legitimate expression of democratic participation, violence is never acceptable.”

The Prelate also rejected what he described as “unfounded accusations against Catholic Services suppliers, who every day strive to provide support and critical attention to the most vulnerable,” and added that such accusations “contribute to social tensions and a growing climate of fear.”

Mons. Broglio concluded by calling for “fair and human solutions” to these migratory challenges and promised “cooperation and goodwill” of US bishops for that purpose.
