United States: Expert says that there is no political will on migration

Pilar Vásquez Calva, an expert lawyer in International Law, analyzed the raids executed by the United States Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICE) and the protests motivated by these procedures In recent weeksespecially in Los Angeles.

The lawyer said that people who are victims of these raids cannot “plan what they will do or what will happen.”

Although the Trump administration uses as a legal basis that these people do not have the necessary documentation to remain and work in the United States, Vásquez said that “a deeper analysis” of the situation must be done.

“Since 2000 there has not really been a change in the migration legislation of the United States,” he explained. According to the expert, there are a large number of migrants who do not have access to work visas that allow them to legally exercise a trade in US territory.

“They are stuck in this system,” Vásquez said. “At first it was said that they were going to seek to deport people who had committed serious crimes (…) But the reality is that this is not happening,” he added.

The lawyer regretted that raids are running in people’s workplaces.

“Many times they are not even dressed in the badges so you can know that they are ICE agents or other local police. They have been done rarely,” Vázquez said, although he clarified that these operations are not illegal “because there is a legal mandate for which the president can carry out these actions.”

On the migrants who arrived in the United States asking for asylum, he commented “that they have to move forward with their process”, because “each case is a unique story.”

However, he regretted the reality of the people who arrived many years ago and only crossed the border “to start working and make their lives”, because “there is no way for these people to have legal documents and lead a quieter life.”

“That path does not exist. That is the problem so big that we are facing after many years, in which this issue has really been stuck to help there be a migratory process for these millions of people,” said Vásquez.

In that sense, he denounced that “there has been no political will” by the Democrats and Republicans to address this reality, so migrants “have stayed in the middle of the way.”

“The work carried out by migrants in the United States is a very important job, that if they do not do it is not going to do anyone else. They have to recognize this need that also has the United States of the work of migrants, apart from all the good they bring with their Latin culture,” said Vásquez.
