This update coincides with statements by Tomoya Takahashi, president of Toyota Gazoo Racing, the sports car division of the Japanese brand, who assured that they will continue building this type of vehicles “until combustion engines are banned.”
Toyota Gazoo Racing is not only responsible for carrying out the Japanese company’s competition programs, but is also responsible for preparing special versions or sports models of the range throughout the world.
The renewed GR86 coupe seeks to emphasize that sporty character with the incorporation of new elements. while adding more safety equipment.
This update comes a year and a half after this second generation was presented in our country, which included major improvements in style and engine performance.
What does the new GR86 bring?
In the transformation that the automotive industry is undergoing, sports models from many general brands have been eliminated. Toyota, on the other hand, is one of those that maintains this custom and the GR86 is one of its main exponents.
Developed jointly with Subaru, this coupe is updated in our market with new features that impact your performance and that improve their security.
Now the new GR86 incorporates Brembo brakes with red four- and two-piston calipers for the front and rear wheels respectively, which improve braking performance. According to the brand, they provide greater response and resistance in intensive use.
New ZF SACHS shock absorbers have also been incorporated, with which Toyota seeks to provide a faster response in the damping force and better contact with the ground.
In terms of safety, the new GR86 incorporates the package EyeSight developed by Subaru, which brings together various driving assistance systems: adaptive cruise control, blind spot radar and lane departure warning are some of the devices that are added.
The GR86 retains the 2.4-liter boxer engine, associated with a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. The entire set delivers a maximum power of 237 CV at 7000 rpm, with a torque of 250 Nm. Its price in the country is $69,257, with a warranty of 5 years or 150,000 kilometers.
This is not the time for electric
Almost simultaneously with this news, the presidente de Toyota Gazoo Racing, Tomoya Takahashi, acknowledged that they intend to “use internal combustion engines as much as possible.”
Takahashi commented that “there may come a time in the future when engines are banned, but internal combustion engines are not bad, the enemy is carbon,” he said in an interview with the Australian magazine Car Expert.
He also acknowledged that for now there are no plans for a high-performance electric vehicle and that “by using hybrid technology we can reduce carbon emissions.”
