Today we celebrate Saint Stephen Protommartyr, the first to give his life for Christ

Every December 26th the Catholic Church celebrates its first martyr, St. Stephen. Precisely for having been the first to shed his blood for Christ he is termed a “proto-martyr”. The word ‘protomartyr’ is formed by the Greek terms πρῶτος (protos, first) and μάρτυς, μάρτυρος (martyrs, "witness").
