Today we celebrate Saint Stephen Protommartyr, the first to give his life for Christ |
|
Every December 26th the Catholic Church celebrates its first martyr, St. Stephen. Precisely for having been the first to shed his blood for Christ he is termed a “proto-martyr”. The word ‘protomartyr’ is formed by the Greek terms πρῶτος (protos, first) and μάρτυς, μάρτυρος (martyrs, "witness"). |
