This is the tomb of Santa Rosa de Lima in the convent of Santo Domingo in Peru

The Santa Rosa de Lima party in Peru is celebrated this August 30. For that reason Ewtn News arrived at the Convent of Santo Domingo, where the first Saint of America is buried.

Before dying in 1617, with only 31 years of age, Santa Rosa de Lima asked to be buried in the convent of Santo Domingo that she frequented, as indicated by this plaque in the place where she was buried “I donate my body to my Dominican brothers and ask the alms of her grave.”

The tomb of Santa Rosa is in an underground crypt. On it is the Chapter Chamber, where the Dominicans gathered to make decisions of the community. In this place, the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos, the Dean of America, began in 1553.

The Museum, also in the Convent of Santo Domingo, has a chapel of Santa Rosa de Lima, with paintings and images in his honor.

In one of the porches, Mario Acurio, in charge of the Museum Restoration Workshop, brings to light paintings of the seventeenth century, including one of the saint, hidden under several layers of paintings.

“It is an image that mostly represents the sculptures that are made of Santa Rosa. In the right hand it carries a kind of racket, which is the child,” he says.

The place is visited by many local and abroad people, to be able to see the first Holy of America, whose skull rests in the church of Santo Domingo, next to the convent.

Fr. Luis Ramírez, Dominican priest and director of the Museum of the Convent of Santo Domingo, explains that a few years ago “the papal closure of areas of the convent had to be lifted so that they could be visited as a museum. Especially the first floor, the entire first floor” and also the access to the tower.

The priest also told some miracles of healing healing in some tourists by the saints who walked through these halls, such as San Martín de Porres, buried in another place in the convent, and San Juan Macías.

Ramírez recalled that “there was a lady who had cancer and that her family paid her the tour. She took the opportunity to sit on San Martín’s bed, we already received an e-mail two weeks: she wanted to testify because the cancer she had no longer has it.”

“We have the replica of the chair of San Juan Macías, which by tradition people are going to sit there in order to conceive, because there are people who cannot conceive. And in fact, two people have conceived thanks to that intercession,” he added

A hyperrealist image of Santa Rosa de Lima

A few days ago a hyperrealist image of Santa Rosa was inaugurated, based on forensic facial reconstruction that was made with the skull of the saint that can be venerated in the church of Santo Domingo, where there are also the skulls of San Martín de Porres and San Juan Macías.

Father Ramírez told Ewtn that, with the image of Santa Rosa de Lima, “we could be certain of 95% of being seeing Santa Rosa de Lima Viva practically.” In her, the Peruvian Santa has her hands together and her eyes closed as if she were praying.

Pope Leo XIV and Santa Rosa de Lima

Pope Leo XIV, Peruvian nationalized in 2015, is also devoted to Santa Rosa de Lima and visited the museum when he was a bishop of Chiclayo.

Andrea Vásquez, along with her daughter Isabella, visited León XIV in July in the Vatican. About the Holy stressed that “we love how she had that faith, that devotion. And she was able to make those sacrifices she made and the love she had towards God. It is an example to follow.”
