In July 2024, CNA – Ewtn News Advice – visited the set of The Chosen In Midlothian, Texas, and participated in a press conference with several cast members, including Jonathan Rouumie, who plays Jesus in the series.
Roumie talked openly about how he prepared to represent the key events of Holy Week, which will be shown in the fifth season, and how his relationship with Jesus has changed over the years interpreting it.
When asked how he prepared for the most shocking moments of the season, such as the last dinner and betrayal in the Getsemaní orchard, Roumie replied: “I knelt.”
“I spend a lot of time in front of the Blessed Sacrament, asking for more strength than I think and, ultimately, trusting that God has brought me to this point, with my circumstances, my struggles, my fears and concerns,” he shared. “He has taken me to all this knowing that he holds me. I just have to remember and leave everything at the foot of the altar. ”
At the time of the interview, Roumie prepared to film the last dinner and the events in Gethsemaní, scenes that he described as “colossal.”
“I’m praying a lot while I work in these scenes,” he said.
He added that, for particularly difficult scenes, he tries to “stay completely and present at the time, concentrated in what will happen and in what is in the script, delivering everything. And when he ends, I respond a great sigh of relief. ”
However, fully aware of what is still missing, Roumie said: “I think the most difficult scenes are still coming to me.”
When asked how his relationship with Jesus has changed over the years when he interpreted him in The ChosenThe Catholic actor said that the word “deepened” fails to describe the magnitude of the change. “I think he has taken me to a point where I know that I really can’t do anything without Jesus and he constantly reminds me.”
“My goal in daily life is to try to live according to the principles and the standard that Christ himself established as a fully human and fully divine man who walked on earth, knowing that I will never reach that standard, and being well with that, understanding that It is part of the way, ”he added.
“Aspiring holiness and failing, falling into the process, but keeping Jesus always before me as I advance. That is my main objective these days, ”he concluded.
