They investigate the suicide of a student at a Catholic school in Spain

The regional authorities and the Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the events prior to the suicide of a student from a Catholic school in the city of Seville (Spain), who could have suffered bullying without measures being activated after reporting it.

Sandra, a 14-year-old student at the Irlandesas Loreto school in the capital of Seville, jumped into the void from her home last Tuesday after returning from school, where her parents had reported that she was being subjected to bullying.

The Department of Educational Development and Vocational Training of the Government of Andalusia, after carrying out an inspection at the educational center, announced that it will open an administrative file to clarify the possible responsibilities that may arise.

According to the civil authorities, the school “did not activate either the harassment protocol or the self-harm protocol, as required by current regulations,” as stated Europa Press.

Given the tragic events, the educational center issued a statement in which he expressed his condolences, without referring to the circumstances of the death, the background of the case or the school’s action regarding the harassment reported by the minor.

“We are deeply shocked by the death of our student. From the Irlandesas Loreto school we convey our deepest condolences to the family,” they noted.

“Our main concern and all our efforts are focused on accompanying our students and our student’s family,” the note continues, detailing that the center works “in coordination with the Educational Administration and the corresponding organizations, with the help of the Emotional Wellbeing team of the Territorial Delegation of Seville.”

To address Sandra’s death, the teachers, together with the Guidance and Emotional Wellbeing teachers at the school, “have especially attended to our students, who ended the day praying in the chapel for our student,” says the text, which advances the upcoming celebration of “a school Eucharist in her memory” in the coming days.

The Irlandesas Loreto School in Seville is part of the Mary Ward Educational Foundation, founder of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Congregation of Jesus.
