They call him an extreme rightist and the archbishop responds: The lady is coming with slogans

The Archbishop of Oviedo, Mons. Jesús Sanz Montes, has responded to the socialist leader Adriana Lastra who has called him an “ultra-rightist” with a forceful message through the red social X (antes Twitter):

“The lady comes with slogans. Marking the step from her ideology. Bold ignorance that imposes themes, censorship, threats and agenda. Lessons who can, not who wants. “I love freedom too much, that which is derived from Truth, to shrink from synchronized labels,” the prelate expressed.

Bishop Sanz thus responds to the person who has recently taken office as delegate of the Government in Asturias, Adriana Lastra, who has a long political career in the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE).

In the socialist formation she has held various positions, including deputy general secretary of the party and spokesperson for the socialist group in the Congress of Deputies. Until her recent appointment as Government delegate in Asturias, she chaired the Commission of the State Pact against Gender Violence.

Upon taking office in his new position, Lastra considered that Bishop Sanz has developed a “deeply derogatory, confrontational, deeply political and far-right” discourse. Specifically, he refers to the homilies that he delivers every September 9 at the Mass celebrated in the Sanctuary of Covadonga on the occasion of the feast of the Asturian patron saint.

Lastra also assured that he has not yet decided whether he will attend, as is protocol, this Eucharistic celebration, but that in the institutional meeting that he will hold privately with Bishop Montes in the coming days, he will address the issue:

“I hope he reconsiders. I am going to meet with the archbishop and I will convey this to him privately. I will try to go where they invite me, but I will not go where I know in advance that the majority of Asturians and Spaniards are going to be insulted,” Lastra stated.

Mons. Sanz Montes was born in Madrid in 1955. Trained at the Conciliar Seminary of Toledo, he entered the Franciscan Order in 1981. Five years later he was ordained a priest and achieved episcopal dignity in 2003, when he was appointed Bishop of Jaca and Huesca. He has been at the head of the Archdiocese of Oviedo since January 2010. He has been a member of the Permanent Commission and the Executive Commission of the Spanish Episcopal Conference.

Throughout his apostolic work he has distinguished himself by using direct language and denouncing politicians’ deviations from the Social Doctrine of the Church or criticizing pastoral decisions within the Catholic Church, both in his letters and in homilies and through the social networks.
