Between December 29 and 30, 2023, the dictatorship led by Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, has detained five other priests, adding to the four who had been captured the day before.
Hostility towards the Catholic Church in Nicaragua has seen a significant increase in recent days. So far, 12 members of the clergy have been detained – including two bishops – along with two seminarians.
According to the independent Nicaraguan newspaper The confidential, the arrests carried out between Friday and Saturday, December 30, took place in the city of Managua. Among those detained are Mons. Silvio Fonseca, who serves as vicar of Family and Life, as well as Mons. Miguel Mántica, the parish priest of the San Francisco de Asís Church. In addition, the priests Mykell Monterrey, Gerardo Rodríguez and Raúl Zamora.
