The Ambassador of Mexico to the Holy See, Alberto Medardo Barranco Chavarría, revealed that there are currently 91 open canonization causes of Mexicans in the Vatican.
In an interview with ACI Prensa on March 15, Barranco Chavarría explained that the canonization process begins in a diocese, “after receiving approval from the Vatican.” At the beginning, he explained that a file must be “put together with the biography and testimonies of fame for holiness.” If the Holy See approves this file, the candidate is declared a Servant of God, which begins a new phase of analysis.
Later, once the Pope recognizes that the person lived the virtues to a heroic degree, the candidate is declared Venerable. To move towards beatification, scientific verification of a miracle is required. Once beatified, the verification of a second miracle allows the person to be proclaimed a saint by the Pope.
