the virtuous circle as a way of approaching water

The idea of Loop Pool Tejo (after the name of the Tagus River in Portuguese) arose in response to the need for an alternative to give the inhabitants of Lisboa Recreational options, such as swimming and other water sports, in the city center.

Although Lisbon is very close to the sea and on the estuary of the Tagus River, there are no planned structures to conconnect its inhabitants with water.

Furthermore, the large surrounding beaches they usually are extremely busy on hot days and reaching them via the 25 de Abril bridge requires hours of patience.

Las riparian zones such as Belém, Braço de Prata and Parque das Nações, which offer leisure spaces and riverside terraces, do not foresee any type of program that takes advantage of the Tagus River. And the options within the city are limited to the public swimming pools outdoors.

It allows swimming and diving in the pool but also activities such as rowing or stand up paddle in the river.

For this reason, the Loop Pool Tejo proposal comes to relieve that thirst. Designed by studios Atelier Baum y X Atelieris still in the project stage.

The proposal is based on a central ring with filtered water which generates a pool for swimming and recreation. Add a solarium area, a space with stands as an amphitheater and rest areas in the sun and also with shade.

“A city with a climate like Lisbon would be expected to have a strong bathing culture, however, the proximity of the beaches of Linha and the Costa da Caparica made Lisboners turn their backs on the river, if people ever used the Tajo to bathe. The idea of Loop Pool Tejo is to return this access to the river to the people of Lisbon”, say its authors.

Beyond providing a public space for aquatic activities in the city, the project highlights and revitalizes the Braço de Prata breakwater. But, besides, duck an architectural intervention that is inserted in the middle of the water like a sculptural element.

“It seeks to establish an analogy between the pragmatic and functional form of the existing breakwater with the inherent fluidity of the waters of the Tagus River. This shape dialogue “It reacts imperceptibly to the needs of the practices we propose.”

The design starts from a structure founded on concrete piles arranged in continuity with the breakwater. It is through this structure that the ring can float on the water like a huge life preserver.

The circle is the centerpiece of the project. Its shape delimits an interior pond that offers containment and, in turn, the ring proposes a circulation flow around it.

Towards the north, the sculptural piece rises to create an area of solarium and amphitheater facing west. Towards the south, with your back to the noise of the pool, a second slope defines a rest and living area. There is also a direct entry point to the river, suitable for activities such as remo or the stand up paddle.

The highest area of the west wing of the pool is used to jump and sink into the pond, allowing for water sports activities. dive and also fostering a playful atmosphere.

At the water level of the pool there is another ring that passes under the slope and creates a shaded rest area to protect users from the sun.
