The Vatican announced that it will project the film Gaza’s children – on the waves of freedom (How Kids Roll), A 2024 drama directed by Loris Lai that narrates the difficult friendship between a Palestinian child and an Israeli united by his passion for surfing, in the middle of the war in the Gaza Strip in 2003.
The tape, inspired by the novel On the waves of freedom Of the Italian writer, Nicoletta Bortolotti, he presents himself as a metaphorical story of hope and reconciliation. The projection will take place at the Vatican film library this Thursday, September 25 as part of a film cycle dedicated to peace and fraternity.

The film tells the story of Mahmud, a Palestinian child, and Alon, an Israeli, who manage to overcome the barriers of fear and distrust thanks to a former surf champion who accompanies them in his friendship process. The original music is signed by Nicola Piovani, winner of the Oscar, which brings a special emotional dimension to the narrative.
Loris Lai debuts in the feature film with this work that combines drama and visual poetry to address issues such as war, fraternity and yearning for peace.
The film was praised by Pope Francis, who at the time highlighted his “great contribution in formation to fraternity, to social justice and peace”, as reviewed Vatican News.
The initiative is part of the cultural efforts of the Holy See to promote the dialogue between peoples and religions, at a time when the conflict in the Middle East returns to international attention again.
