In January 2023, the Vatican announced the reopening of this mysterious case that has gone around the world, after it had been closed in April 2020 without any conclusion. The decision of the Holy See responded to the repeated requests of Emanuela’s brother, Pietro Orlandi, who for almost 40 years has led a campaign to resolve what happened.
The brother of the missing woman has affirmed for decades the existence of this document in the hands of the Vatican, which could provide a historical reconstruction that would help clarify what happened.
Pietro Orlandi assured on more than one occasion that it was Paolo Gabriele, the former “butler” of Benedict XVI and a key figure in the “Vatileaks” case, who informed him about the existence of the dossier, a theory also defended by Domenico Giani, former commander of the Vatican gendarmerie.
According to the Orlandi family’s lawyer, Laura Sgró, to the EFE agency, the recent statement from the Vatican represents “an important step towards the truth.”
Sgró stressed that “the Vatican has carried out activities related to the kidnapping of Emanuela Orlandi that it has never shared with either the Orlandi family or the Rome prosecutor’s office.”
He also recalled that a request was made to see and extract a copy of this file since 2017. “Who has kept this file until now, given that on several occasions, in the aforementioned years, the Vatican authorities publicly reported that no file existed and that the of Emanuela Orlandi was ‘a closed case’?” he stated in statements to EFE.
Emanuela Orlandi was the daughter of a Vatican official who disappeared under strange circumstances on June 22, 1983 at the age of 15. Since then, all efforts to locate his whereabouts have been unsuccessful.
Although there is no official answer to this mystery, which even has a documentary on Netflix, some hypotheses point to the Roman mafia, corrupt members of the clergy or even activists from the “Turkish Liberation Front” who demanded the freedom of Ali Agca, author of the shooting of Pope Saint John Paul II in Saint Peter’s Square in 1981.
