Christians in Nigeria, including members of the Catholic Church, have suffered persecution by Muslims for years. In this note we review the role of the United States in this worrying situation in the African country.
On January 25, at a press conference in Washington DC, EWTN White House correspondent Owen Jensen asked why Nigeria is not on the list of countries of particular concern and whether the government believes that Christians are persecuted in the country.
Vedant Patel, chief deputy spokesperson for the US State Department, responded: “We are paying attention and assessing the circumstances of religious freedom in countries around the world, including Nigeria of course, and that work will continue.”
