With the aim of honor the legacy of former president Raúl AlfonsínLast week the initiative was officially presented “Chascomús Km 0 of Democracy”.
Promoted by the Municipality of Chascomús, the city where Alfonsín was born, the program includes the creation of the Raúl Alfonsín Historical Museum of Democracythe Municipal Memory Archive and the Multicultural Space of Democracy.
“It’s a way of honor and keep alivein memory, the legacy of someone who dedicated his life to the fight for freedom, social justice, peace and democracy,” said Javier Gastón, mayor of the municipality, who will travel to the Vatican since the papa Francisco showed interest in this initiative.
It was also declared of interest by the Chamber of Deputies of the Nation and endorsed by the Organization of Ibero-American States (OIA).
Among other things, the “Chascomús Km 0 of Democracy” proposal will seek to implement the Diploma in Democracy and Future Parliamentwith the aim of honoring the legacy of the former president and projecting democratic values in the region.
“Chascomús, the city that saw the birth of the president of the return of democracy in the country, stands as a place of memory and learning. This project not only celebrates the past, but invites us to look to the future, inspiring others to continue building a more just and democratic society,” said the organizers.
Those who come to this city in the province of Buenos Aires, the “Raul R. Alfonsín” circuit contains places, monuments, life stories related to his life in this place: his last home in front of the Main Plaza (Crámer and Mitre); the Social Club (which concentrated his political and social life); the Monument in Parque Libres del Sur (in commemoration of his death); the Deliberative Council (Bank where he served as Mayor); the Radical Committee (Party Headquarters in Chascomús); the Monument to Democracy, which bears the signature of the architect Clorindo Testa. Casa Laurel (Lavalle 227), where he lived until 1976, is currently a boutique hotel: the President Suite is located where Alfonsín’s room used to be.
