At the beginning of the Vigil, the only light is that which emanates from the Pascual Candle. The celebrant then shares this flame with all the attendees who carry their candles. This gesture symbolizes the faith that we all receive and share.
At the same time, all the baptized are reminded that they must be bearers of the light of Christ, witnesses of his love in the midst of the circumstances in which they live. Every Christian should be like a flame that lights and warms hearts.
The flame also represents a living image of the Resurrection, of man who abandons sin and is born to new life. While the candle is lit, the priest can say words similar to: “The light of Christ, rising in Glory, dispels the darkness from our hearts and minds.”
