This Saturday, at noon, in front of the mast of the elegant Argentine Yacht Club (YCA) -National Historic Monument- in North Darsena, is launched on Rolex South Atlantic Circuit with the participation of 75 renowned vessels from our country, Uruguay, Brazil and Ecuador who will raise the sails towards Punta del Este to sail the first competitive leg arriving on Sunday.
This is the most anticipated regional event for formula boat crews. ORC, ORC Sportboat and of the J70 International Classall organized by the YCA and its similar entity in the town of Esteña. This unmissable summer event for sailboat lovers will continue with several regattas on the Uruguayan coast: Barlovento-Sotavento, La Barra Circuit and Vuelta a Gorriti.
Some will be part of the game 500 navigators who provide experience, technique, resistance, logistics and strategies to face these challenging routes of the emblematic South American championship. Among the high performance ships will be the Argentine ones “Patagonia”, “Gaucho”, “Saint Gregory”, “Sandokan” y “Mac”, and the brazilians “Excellent” y “Creole”.
Rafael Pereira Aragónowner of the “Patagonia”, commented to Clarín that they were “very excited and anxious about this new edition because it is enriching to be in South American regattas sharing the experience with regional boats in a scenario that we all know; but it is also changing and we put different tactics into play. Of course, it helps us that we have led positions, like last year in the Apertura and the Argentino, but we know that this does not guarantee…”.
The 12 meter long ORC handicap sailboat was designed in 2011 by Javier Soto and is piloted by the same team that sails the legendary “Matrero”which has raced – and received trophies – in the Mediterranean, such as in the races of Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Antibes or Porto Santo Stefano. In addition to Pereira Aragón, Jordán Rivas, Emiliano Homps, Diego Weppler, Eduardo, Martín Zimmermann, Marcus Behrendt, Martín Busch, Félix Fernández Madero, Miguel Saubidet and Gabriel Marino contribute their experience.
The racing days that start from the South Channel of the Port of Buenos Aires will take place until February 3 with crossings that will total 310 km (167 nautical miles). Of the 75 boats involved, 40 are Argentine, with 35 in the ORC category and 5 in J70.
