The signing of the decree that closes the diocesan stage of the investigation, called “closing session of the Diocesan Instructor Procedure”, was held on September 24 at the Archbishopric of Santiago.
The event was attended by the Episcopal Delegate for the causes of the saints, P. Pablo Arteaga Echeverría; the promoter of Justice, P. Martín Echeverría Vidal; and the notary, Marco Martínez Vargas. The medical expert was also present, Dr. Tomás Regueira Heskia, and the vice speaker of the cause, Sr. Luisa Daniela Pereira Sepúlveda, religious of the Santa Marta congregation.
The decree was signed by the Archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Fernando Chomali, and marks the completion of this phase, which consisted of collecting all the testimonies and documents related to the case in the Archdiocese.
The compiled material will now be sent to the Vatican, where experts will evaluate their validity and determine if it is effectively a miracle. Of the three official specimens that are required at this stage, one will remain in the archive of the Archdiocese, while the other two will be sent to the dicas supplies for the causes of the saints in Rome.
It will be Fr. Pablo Arteaga who delivers the documents in the Dicastery he represents in Chile.
At the conclusion of this stage, the vicepostulator, on behalf of the religious community founded by the Blessed Reggio, acknowledged: “We are very happy because we have concluded a task that has just just had time, dedication and prayer.”
“We firmly believe that our founding father lived an authentic life of holiness and his charism of reception, faith and service continues to mark our path,” he said.
The Dicasteria for the causes of the saints will now examine the validity of what is acted in Santiago to evaluate, through the corresponding expert opinions, the authenticity of the alleged miracle.
Who was Blessed Tommaso Reggio?
Blessed Tommaso Reggio was born in Italy on January 9, 1818. He was a Italian priest and archbishop remembered for his service to the poor and his commitment to Christian education.
He dedicated his life to the poor, sick and abandoned children, standing out for their social sensitivity and by embodying the Gospel in service to all, without distinction.
In 1878 he founded the congregation of the sisters of Santa Marta, inspired by the spirit of hospitality of Marta de Bethania, a work at the service of the most needy that today has a presence in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, India and Lebanon.
In 1892, Mons. Tommaso Reggio was appointed Archbishop of Genoa, where he promoted ecclesial reforms, strengthened the formation of the clergy and promoted the participation of the laity in the life of the Church.
He died on November 22, 1901, leaving as a final testimony the words: “Only God, only God is enough for me, that God’s will be done in everything.”
He was beatified on September 3, 2000 by Pope John Paul II. The miracle that made possible its beatification occurred in Valparaíso in 1986, and it was the healing of a little girl who was first basic at the Juana Ross Liceo in Edwards, who was on the verge of death because she suffered the “Guillain Barré” syndrome and pulmonary atelectasis.
