The Archbishopric of Toledo confirms a priest arrest

The Archbishopric of Toledo (Spain) confirmed the detention last Sunday of a priest, canon of the cathedral, for possession of narcotic substances and separated him from his ministry in a precautionary way.

In A statementthe primate diocese of Spain denied that the detainee is Fr. Álvaro García Paniagua, rector of the major seminary of Toledo, “whose name has been published in some medium” as the protagonist of these facts.

On the other hand, “deeply regrets the facts that have caused the arrest and resume any criminal conduct that could have allegedly commit the priest,” whose name is Carlos Loriente García.

Likewise, the Archdiocese “expresses its full confidence in justice and, although it considers that the responsibility of the facts corresponds to the personal scope of the detainee, expresses his willingness to collaborate with her.”

The Archdiocese of Toledo communicates in the same way that it has opened an investigation and that “has been precautionary from the exercise of the ministry and its trade.”

Finally, “forgiveness to the people of God for the moral damage that may cause the alleged crimes of a priest of the archdiocese.”

The detainee, P. Carlos Loriente García, was born in Toledo in 1980 and was ordered priest in July 2004. In 2021, he was appointed Episcopal Vicar for the clergy, a position in which he has served until September 15, when he was replaced by Fr. Miguel Garrigóswho already served as a vicar of evangelization.

Throughout his pastoral work, Fr. Loriente has worked in different parishes and was linked to the educational work of the Catholic Church as a professor of religion and as a trainer in theological studies.

He has also served as Vice Chancellor of the Major Seminary until 2021 and general secretary of the Higher Institute for Theological Studies “San Ildefonso de Toledo”.
