The new Swiss Guards express their loyalty and absolute willingness to serve the successor of Peter with these words: “I swear to faithfully, loyally and honorably serve the reigning Pontiff and his legitimate successors, to dedicate myself to them with all my strength, sacrificing, if necessary, my life in its defense.”
“I assume the same duties for the College of Cardinals during the vacancy of the Apostolic See. I promise before the Commander and the other Superiors respect, fidelity and obedience. So I swear. May God and our Patron Saints assist me.”
They also recite the oath while holding the flag with one hand and raising only three fingers in the other as a symbol of the Holy Trinity.
