Sr. María Troncatti: Vatican Commission verifies mortal remains of the future Santa Salesiana

A Vatican commission is in Ecuador to verify the authenticity and state of conservation of the mortal remains of Sr. María Troncatti, Missionary Salesian who will be declared Santa in October of this year, in a ceremony in which Pope Leo XIV will also canonize the first saints of Venezuela.

The text specifies that this verification is carried out from July 14 to 19, through a commission led by Fr. Pierluigi Cameroni, a general postulator for the causes of the Saints of the Salesian family, which in the town of Sucúa and with a specialized team, verify “the authenticity and the state of conservation of the mortal remains of Sr. María Troncatti and Father Carlos Crespi, also in the process of canonization”.

Fr. Carlos Crespi Croci He was a Italian Salesian and missionary priest who delivered his life in the city of Cuenca, where he died in April 1982, after a life delivered to the most needy service.

The statement of the Salesian religious emphasizes that this process of verification of the moral remains is a “significant and sacred moment that responds to the value that the Church grants to the relics of the saints and blessed, as concrete signs of its passage through the world and of its testimony of holiness.”

For this reason, the Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Méndez, Mons. Néstor Mondesteoca Becerra, SDB, constituted a court to accompany “the process with rigor and fidelity.”

The court is made up of Fr. Daniel Tobar, episcopal delegate of the Apostolic Vicariate of Méndez; Fr. Cameroni; Fr. Luciacno Bellini, promoter of Justice; Dr. Paolo Fabián Castillo, medical expert; The Salesian religious Sor Rosa Molina and Sister Elena Tinitana, as witnesses; and Sor Norma Reyes, inspector secretary, who serves as a notary.

The statement finally indicates that “the treatment and documentation of the Osamanta de Sr. María Troncatti constitutes a key stage within this path that drives our evangelizing mission, especially in the Amazon.”

The future Santa Sor María Troncatti

Sr. María Troncatti was born in Brescia, Italy, in 1883. During World War I he conducted health care courses in Varazze and worked as a Red Cross nurse at the Military Hospital: an experience that would later help her in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

He left Ecuador in 1922, sent among the indigenous Shuar, where with two other religious begins a difficult work of evangelization amid risks of all kinds.

His work for the promotion of the Shuar woman flourished in one hundred of new Christian families, formed for the first time in the free choice of young husbands.

Sr. María died in a plane crash in Sucua on August 25, 1969, offering her life for reconciliation between settlers and indigenous people. It was declared venerable on November 8, 2008. It was beatified in November 2012.

Pope Leo XIV will declare Santa María Troncatti in the Vatican on October 19.
