Sixth Sunday of Easter 2024

Sixth Sunday of Easter 2024

Today, May 5, the Church celebrates the Sixth Sunday of Easter. Five weeks have passed since the great Sunday in which we celebrated the Resurrection of the Lord and began the final stretch of the ‘Fiftieth’. On this occasion the Church invites us to delve deeper into the authentic meaning of joy, which comes from fulfilling God’s commandments, since these spring from his infinite love for us: “This is what he commanded you: that you love one another.” others (as I have loved you)” (see: Jn 15, 17).

Only Jesus is capable of teaching what true love is, in all its fullness. How is it possible to live that love? Is it not an illusion or something unattainable? Isn’t the world as it is and doesn’t such an ideal seem to be devoid of all realism? The answer of Jesus Christ, God made man, is no. He himself has shown us the way: to fulfill God’s commandments. We are certainly sinners, but if we are united to Him as He is united to the Father, everything is possible. That is the counterpart of “without me you can do nothing” (Jn 15:5) from the previous week.

Let us repeat the chorus of the Psalm today with confidence and joy: “The Lord has shown us his love and his loyalty. Hallelujah” (Ps 97, 1.2-3ab.3cd-4). And may every day of this week not lack a Hallelujah!
