Saint of the day May 9: Saint Louise de Marillac. Catholic Saints

In Angers, Luisa took charge of a hospital that was in a state of abandonment, and, in Paris, she cared for those affected by an epidemic. She also helped the victims of the so-called ’30 Years War’ and those who suffered from the daily violence of Paris, a large and turbulent city. Despite her delicate health, she was always ready to serve and radiate enthusiasm.

By that time the monastery of the Sisters of Charity had become the home of the poor and the homeless, of those who, forced by circumstances, wandered the streets of the French capital. Luisa and Vicente sent the religious men and women of the congregation out of the cloister every day to encourage and help as many people in need as possible.

In the last years of her life, the saint’s ailments prevented her from moving around. Prostrate, before leaving for the presence of God, she left a charge to her spiritual sisters: “Be dedicated to the service of the poor… love the poor, honor them, my daughters, and you will honor Christ himself.”

Saint Louise de Marillac died on March 15, 1660. Saint Vincent de Paul would follow her only half a year later.
