Saint of the day May 12: Blessed Álvaro del Portillo. Catholic Saints

On November 28, 1982, when ‘the Work’ was erected as a Personal Prelature, Pope Saint John Paul II appointed as Prelate of the The Work of God to Don Alvaro. Later, on January 6, 1991, Saint John Paul II himself conferred episcopal ordination on him.

Álvaro del Portillo died on March 23, 1994, at the age of 80, after having participated in a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Saint John Paul II, during his funeral, appeared to pray before his mortal remains, as a sign of recognition for the service that the blessed person provided to the people of God.
