A hospitable soul
Juan, when he worked as a servant, learned that in service love becomes palpable, visible. Christ became the servant of all and was the one who loved the most and is the one who loves us the most. Moved by this conviction, the saint founded a hospital in Granada and, later, together with his group of companions, formed the basis of what would become the Hospitaller Order, dedicated to the pastoral care of health. The members of the Order would be dedicated entirely to caring for the poor and needy.
In that hospital, Brother Juan would work almost non-stop for ten years. They were hard years, with many tribulations and pain, which were made more bearable – if not beautiful – thanks to prayer. Without Christ, nothing would have been possible, Juan thought: “There are so many poor people who come here that I myself am often shocked at how they can support themselves, but Jesus Christ provides everything and feeds them.”
