The passion
According to the minutes of Perpetua and Felicidad, the so-called Passion (The passion of the martyrs Perpetua and Felicidad), both were thrown to the wild beasts – a large group of wild cows and bulls – to be beaten to death; However, the beasts did not manage to finish them off.
Afterwards, wounded and exhausted, they approached each other, gave each other the kiss of peace in Christ, and were tied to be beheaded at the hands of the executioners.
Tradition includes a scene according to which Felicidad died from a precise cut in the neck, while Perpetua, faced with the executioner’s mistake, had to be finished off in the throat, at her own request and indication. The fact has become a symbol of courage and dedication. The martyrdom took place around the year 202.
