On Sunday, when the news arrived that Jesus’ tomb was empty, John ran out with Peter because they thought the Master’s body had been stolen. When they arrived at the place, the tomb was empty – the Gospel narrates – and then “they saw and believed” (cf. Jn 20,1-10).
Later, when the Risen Christ appeared to the disciples on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, Peter asked about John’s future and the Lord answered: “If I want him to stay until I come, what does it matter to you? Follow me” (Jn 21,23).
Scripture indicates that because of that response a rumor spread that John was not going to die, something that the Apostle himself denied by indicating that the Lord never said: “He will not die.”
