Clinging to the Cross of Christ, intercessor of priests who have fallen into sin
Jesus granted Gemma countless graces, including mystical experiences of his Passion. The young woman also received the stigmata, which appeared on her body only for certain periods of time. Sharing the wounds and sufferings of the Savior united her much more closely with Jesus, the model of her dedication out of love for sinners.
Neither the constant suffering, nor the mockery and misunderstanding could overcome her. She was accused of being crazy on several occasions, but she continued to love and serve the Lord until the day she died.
Finally, the saint fell seriously ill – probably from tuberculosis. Feeling very weak and with death ever closer to her, Gemma offered one last sacrifice for the conversion of a priest who had fallen into spiritual disgrace. When he found out what the young woman had done for him, he reconsidered and asked for forgiveness two days before God also called him to his presence, in a surprising way.
