Dositheus, then, leaves the army and asks to be received in the monastery of Gaza, a place known for its rigor and for the saints who lived there. In order to be accepted, Dositheus was sent to Abba Dorotheus, Saint Dorotheus Abbot, who tested him. The Abbot sent Dositheus to the infirmary, where he practiced obedience by caring for the sick. Then he would train him in fasting and abstinence, gradually decreasing the amount of his meals.
This was of great spiritual benefit to Saint Dositheus, who began to control his anger and vainglory under the direction of Dorotheus. After five years of prayer and ascetic exercise, Saint Dositheus fell ill, probably from tuberculosis or some respiratory disease. Shortly afterward he died, still young. The holy Abbot Barsanufio accompanied him until the end of his days.
