Saint Mary Troncatti is “a nurse of the soul and body” sent by God, says postulator

Saint Mary Troncatti is “a nurse of the soul and body” sent by God to humanity, affirms from Rome the postulator of the cause of the Salesian missionary, elevated to the altars on Sunday, October 19 along with six other saints.

“I really like to emphasize that the gestures that Sister María made also have a symbolic, moral meaning because this man did not only have paralysis of the body. In the miracle the soul was also healed, because we have paralysis of our soul,” said Fr. Pierluigi Cameroni, Salesian postulator of the cause of canonization of Sister María Troncatti, in an interview with EWTN News.

The Salesian priest thus referred to Juwà Bosco, the Ecuadorian and Shuar indigenous carpenter who received the miracle worked through the intercession of Saint María Troncatti in 2015, when he was inexplicably cured after having suffered the loss of part of his head in a serious accident that left him on the verge of death.

The postulator specified that the man, husband and father of six children, “not only had a physical silence” but “a relational silence with his family, with people. And he had a lack of understanding of reality according to the Gospel, according to reason.”

With the miracle, he highlighted, “Sister Troncatti is going to say that healing is not only physical, it is the healing of the whole person in all its dimensions, moral, psychological, spiritual. This man began a new life as a testimony. This man is here in Rome these days and gave a lot of testimony of his new life, of his renewal.”

With this miracle, he continued, Saint Maria Troncatti “will put the seal of her holy life, a life dedicated to the healing of the body and souls.”

“In a world that is very sick, that has many diseases, Sister Troncatti is a nurse of the soul and body sent by God to our humanity,” he stressed.

Father Cameroni also highlighted that “it is very significant that this canonization took place on the day of World Mission Day” celebrated on October 19.

The saint arrived in Ecuador from Italy in 1922, and entered the Amazon jungle in 1925, with the Shuar people of the town of Macas, in the Apostolic Vicariate of Méndez.

The priest said that “100 years ago, the situation was more difficult” and that is why “the first impact was not easy, because when they found a group of Shuars, there was a difficult situation, because a girl belonging to a chief had a very serious wound and they asked her sister to heal her.”

“They prayed to the Virgin Help of Christians. Sister María, who was a nurse, operated and obtained a prodigious cure, which she attributed to the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. This was a safe passage to enter the Amazon jungle,” he said.

The Salesian also referred to the “maternal tenderness” of the saint “towards the missionaries, who returned after months of mission in the Amazon jungle in very serious, difficult physical conditions, and also had in her very significant recovery help, not only physical, but also psychological, moral, and relational.”

The postulator also highlighted that Santa María Troncatti dedicated herself to saving babies with disabilities, who were discarded in the Shuar culture, she helped women who suffered violence; and promoted reconciliation between indigenous people and settlers.
