On a day like today, February 24, 1208, Saint Francis of Assisi made the decision to lead a life of poverty, which would eventually lead to the founding of the Franciscan Orders.
As he remembers General Curia of the Order of Capuchin Friars MinorSaint Francis, during a Mass in what is now the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels in Assisi (Italy), “heard the words of the Gospel about the sending of the apostles and took them as a message sent personally to him.”
It was chapter 10 of the Gospel of Matthew, in which the Lord sends his apostles and instructs them not to carry “gold, silver, or money in their purses, nor a bag for the journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor walking stick”.
