Saint Augustine: Feast of his conversion

In the year 387, Augustine was baptized, already mature, along with Adeodatos, his son, who would die shortly after. The saint was well aware that his conversion came at the age in which Christ concluded his work on earth. He knew, now with crystal clarity, that his comings and goings in this life had been nothing but waste, blinded by appearances and mirages.

God later called Augustine to the priesthood and episcopacy. As bishop he ruled the diocese of Hippo for 34 years. Thanks to his intellectual and spiritual gifts he soon became a light in the middle of a world that was crumbling before his eyes. Because of his lucidity, courage and wisdom, the bishop of Hippo was respected by locals and strangers, inside and outside the Church, as he continues to this day.

He fought heresies, debated against those who promoted ideas contrary to faith and truth, convened and presided over councils, and traveled announcing the Gospel.

In August 430, Saint Augustine fell ill and died on the 28th, at the age of 75, which is why the Church celebrates its universal feast that day (August 28 of each year).
