“It will be a different and specific security strategy, appropriate to the magnitude of the event and the current international context,” Giannini saidaccording to Italian media, after an extraordinary meeting of the committee for order and security last week.
Tor Vergata, an extensive area located on the southeast periphery of Rome, mainly known for hosting one of the main Italian public universities, where the vigil and mass will take place with Pope Leo XIV, on August 2 and 3, will be the epicenter of the operational deployment. In fact, thousands of young people is scheduled in tents in the same enclosure.
This open space- which has more than 800,000 m² of land– was already used in 2000, as the scene of the World Youth Day with San Juan Pablo II, with the participation of more than two million young people.
For the development without incident of the most massive celebrations of the Jubilee of Young people, the security person in charge of Rome announced exceptional measures that include an anti -drone surveillance system, as well as the installation of control points in the accesses.
“Although we do not have specific signs that indicate a threat, these measures are mandatory at the time we live,” Giannini said.
In this way, all participants will be subjected to individual controls – not random – in the income of the enclosures. All luggage will be reviewed, and rapid control devices will be used in the different accesses marked in established itineraries. “We will not identify each person, since they are previously registered, but the control of bags and backpacks will be systematic,” Giannini added.
Security Forces of Spain, France and Poland
In addition to the police reinforcements that will be transferred to Rome those days from all over Italy, the capital will have the support of agents of the Spanish Civil Guard, the French gendarmerie and the Polish National Police, in response to the remarkable presence of the pilgrims who come from these countries.
The security device will also include the protection of key areas such as the Plaza de San Pedro del Vaticano, where on Tuesday, July 29, the opening mass will be held; The maximum circus, which will host a penitential day on August 1.
One million pilgrims
The Dicasterio for Evangelization has not yet confirmed exactly the number of accredited pilgrims for the jubilee of young people, but according to the figures offered by the City Council of Rome, about one million people are expected to travel to the capital; most from Spain, France and Poland.
In addition, a complex logistical deployment will be launched, which includes giant screens, audio and video towers, and a central area with an altar-school of 1,400 m2 where the monumental arch used during the jubileeus of the youth of the year 2000 with San Juan Pablo II will be reinstated.

Likewise, the Calatrava candle will be used for the first time, a rehabilitated structure that will be used during these acts as a reserved area for civil protection, health operators, order forces and organizers.
