Robert Downey Jr. surprised San Diego Comic-Con attendees by revealing that he will return to Marvel as the villain Doctor Doom in the new Avengers film that brothers Joseph and Anthony Russo will direct.
Downey Jr. was known in the superhero franchise as Iron Man, a character he played from 2008 in various films of the studio, but who finally died in the 2019 film ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
The actor appeared on the stage of Hall H of the San Diego Convention – with capacity for 6,000 people – with a mask that covered his face and a green outfit.
People were enraged when, without saying a word, the ‘Oppenheimer’ singer uncovered his face and extended his arms to his sides in a triumphant manner.

Downey Jr. will play the villain, also known as Doctor Doomin the two Avengers films that the Russo brothers will direct titled: ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.
This was the big reveal expected from the Marvel Studios panel at the world’s largest pop culture convention. Before Downey Jr.’s announcement, the stars of the new Fantastic Four movie also made an appearance: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The actors announced ‘The Fantastic Four First Steps’ as the final title of the new film that Matt Shakman will direct and which is scheduled to premiere on July 25, 2025.
On Thursday afternoon, Marvel also had a stellar presentation at the San Diego Comic-Con with the screening of the new film ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. San Diego Comic-Con is taking place in the Californian city until Sunday.
